Education and Training

The UH Cancer Center is dedicated to provide innovative education and training to the public and individuals seeking careers in cancer research.  The COE office offers various educational programs on a variety of topics, including:

Cultural Competency Training

The Cultural Competency Training for healthcare providers and staff, works to address the cultural gap between physicians and their Pacific Islander patients. Cultural competency is the ability to understand, interact, and work well with people of different cultures and ensure quality in health care among different cultural groups. The training exemplifies the use of cultural competency concepts in medical offices, professions, and organizations. It covers linguistically appropriate services and Pacific Islander culture, values, beliefs, and perspectives on healthcare.

Skin Cancer Training

UH Cancer Center faculty and Hawaiʻi Skin Cancer Coalition members Dr. Kevin Cassel and Dr. Terrilea Burnett provide various types of sun safety and skin cancer education and training to high school, undergraduate, and John A. Burns School of Medicine (JABSOM) medical students.

HPV Education Program

The Human Papillomavirus (HPV) Education Program’s goal is to raise awareness to parents with kids aged 9-17 and adults aged 18- 26 about HPV and the importance of getting the HPV vaccine.

Helpful Cancer Information

Helpful Cancer Information, an educational presentation offered to the general public, provides participants with Hawaiʻi-based cancer information and statistics to truly illustrate the burden of different types of cancer within our state. The presentation highlights the top five cancers within Hawaiʻi, common cancer risk factors, and ways to prevent or lessen the risk of developing cancer, as well as cancer specifics by ethnicity, who is at risk, and when to get screened for the top cancers within the state. This presentation consists of data from the Hawaiʻi Cancer at a Glance 2014-2018 report provided by the Hawaiʻi Tumor Registry.

TMIST Clinical Trials Training

The COE office provides educational information sessions about the Tomosynthesis Mammographic Imaging Screening Trial (TMIST) to Pacific Islander populations. During the sessions, Community Health Educators recruit eligible participants and take the patients through every step of the process. They also act as the liaison between participants, the doctor's office, and insurance companies.

Clinical Trials Training

Since 2003, the UH Cancer Center has been providing clinical trials education to JABSOM medical students. Students work on problem-based learning scenarios featuring clinical trials, using the National Cancer Institute’s Clinical Trials Education Series—Cancer Clinical Trials: The In-Depth Program. Additionally, up to 4 first-year students are offered a year-long clinical trials shadowing program where they rotate training onsite with oncologists who are part of the Hawaiʻi Cancer Consortium.
