CANCER BIOLOGY

Cancer Biology

The Cancer Biology program conducts basic cancer research, develops novel cancer diagnostics and cancer treatments, and initiates new clinical trials that positively impact cancer incidence and mortality in Hawaiʻi and the Pacific.

Mission

The Cancer Biology program is committed to reducing cancer incidence and mortality rates in Hawaiʻi and the Pacific region. We are dedicated to translating our fundamental research findings into effective cancer interventions. Our research is motivated by the aggressive nature of the cancers prevalent in the areas we serve and the influence of diverse ethnic backgrounds.

Outcomes

  1. Deepened Understanding of Tumor Microenvironment
  2. Discovery of Novel Therapeutic Agents
  3. Insights into Carcinogenesis and Disparities
  4. Innovative Clinical Trials and Improved Patient Outcomes
  5. Enriched Collaborative Research Environment
  6. Development of Next-Generation Cancer Biologists

POPULATION SCIENCES IN THE PACIFIC

Population Sciences in the Pacific

The Population Sciences in the Pacific program works to eliminate cancer disparities and to reduce overall cancer incidence and mortality rates throughout Hawaiʻi and the Pacific. Our research is focused on two areas: Cancer Epidemiology and Cancer Prevention with a strong focus on meeting the immediate needs of our unique multiethnic population.

Mission

Conduct epidemiological, behavioral, and translational research to understand patterns of cancer occurrence across catchment populations and decrease overall cancer burden, as well as cancer disparities, through the development of innovative interventions.

Outcomes

  1. Diversified & Comprehensive Cancer Research:
    1. In-depth Insights into Understudied Groups
    2. Holistic Approach
  2. Targeted Addressal of Cancer Disparities:
    1. Community-centric Research
    2. Increased Expertise & Collaborative Ventures
  3. Clarity on Climate and Environmental Influences:
    1. Anticipation & Preparedness
    2. Historical & Contemporary Environmental Exposures
  4. Comprehensive Cancer Healthcare Research:
    1. Expansion Across the Cancer Care Continuum
    2. Filling National Research Gaps
    3. Technological Integration
  5. Incorporation of Advanced Technologies in Research:
    1. Data Science in Cancer Research
    2. Collaborative Technological Ventures

COMMUNITY OUTREACH and ENGAGEMENT

Community Outreach and Engagement

The Community Outreach and Engagement Office (COE) conducts research and activities driven by how cancer embraces populations throughout Hawaiʻi and the United States Affiliated Pacific Islands, investigating cancer disparities and defining culturally-appropriate interventions to reduce the incidence and mortality from cancer.

Mission

Engage in bi-directional interactions with catchment populations, community partners, and UH Cancer Center members to foster research and conduct health education addressing catchment cancer control priorities, including cancer health disparities.

Outcomes

  1. Extending COE's Reach
  2. Enhancing Public Education and Minority Accrual
  3. Facilitating Catchment-Relevant Research
  4. Expanding Evaluation Component
  5. Strengthening UH Cancer Center's Brand

CANCER RESEARCH TRAINING

Cancer Research Training

The Cancer Research Training program is dedicated to providing innovative education and training to the next generation of cancer researchers and healthcare professionals.

Mission

Create a cancer research training and education hub that provides innovative training and mentorship for individuals at every career stage, focusing on cancer health disparities.

Outcomes

  1. Broaden Reach
  2. Increase Activities and Funding
  3. Strengthen Partnerships
  4. Enhanced Outreach
  5. Improved Timely Evaluation
